Walking up The Hill

Thursday, August 20 – Day 18

The Coast 2 Coast Team spent the day in D.C.  Blindly, I took D.C.’s trusty public transportation system  - the bus and then Metro in for 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Russell Senate Office Building.  Many of you know about my compulsion to be on time – I won’t even tell you what time I was up in the RV blow drying my hair!

The commute was successful and I headed up the hill.  At first glimpse, the Capitol Building is breathtaking and expansive.

The country’s heartbeat is felt the moment you step from the Metro.  A few blocks from Union Station, on Delaware Street, two Air Force One helicopters flew overhead and circled, I am assuming they disappeared to land on the lawn of our White House…good Morning DC!

For me, the actual walk up The Hill was a moving moment.  I was alone, it was early, there were not many out and about as Congress is in recess, and I had a mission to share the WaterIsLife.com story with all that would listen.  I felt full and determined.

The Russell Senate Offices were quiet.  I roamed the halls, in awe of the powerful and dedicated people that come to work here each day.  My appointment was with a wickedly smart group of Senate Staffers who have a keen interest in African issues.  The Teacher ipod

The group meets every other week – lead by two staffers, one from Senator Inhofe’s office and the other from Senator Kennedy’s office.

After brief introductions, and an overview of the Coast 2 Coast Journey, one of the gentleman asked if I was tired – how funny he should ask!  My response was yes, yes I am!  He said welcome to Washington DC!

How simply insightful, supportive and motivating – as odd as that may sound.

After sharing the WaterIsLife.com message and aligning connections with partners that will be valuable to WaterIsLife.com’s success, we spent time discussing USAID and potential opportunities with FEMA.  It was a fantastic meeting with folks that have the knowledge and the experience to rock our world and create the change we seek.

In the meeting we discussed a return trip, and of course we would welcome the opportunity to continue to seek assistance in the funding and distribution of the water filters as well as creating sustainable water sources for African communities.

We will return to the Senate Office Building again tomorrow, with a trip to the Capitol Building in the afternoon.

I could get used to this lifestyle – dress in black, take public transportation, work on Health Care Reform, be a part of the U.N. Millennium Goal to reduce by half – by 2015 – the number of people without clean drinking water.

Well maybe not a reality, but walking Up The Hill sparked the dream…

I couldn’t help but to take a picture of Senator John McCain’s office!  I think I will stop in and say hello tomorrow!
