Kpaachiyili Village Partnership with Odyssey Prep

by Kristine Bender

“There is incredible potential in the relationship we have developed between the Kpaachi Yili School in Northern Ghana and The Odyssey Preparatory Academy in Arizona. I feel blessed to bridge the gap and provide education and resources to teachers and scholars on both ends of the spectrum. I can already see the passion and drive in my students in Arizona to contribute to the basic needs of children just like them on the other side of the world. I look forward to furthering the partnership and using the inspiration of WATERisLIFE as as a catalyst for positive change.”

Ghana Field Notes- Jessica Lusin   2012

ZALI

The church service we attended and Zali Village Meeting place with music and dancing was incredibly powerful. I was astounded by the solid sense of community in Zali. Everyone has a position, a place within the structure. Even with the children there is a hierarchy of privileges, as well as responsibilities. I was very impressed with how willing they were to help their siblings figure out the WATERisLIFE filter straw. After a long and incredibly patient wait, the children were given their WATERisLIFE straws. Many of them were engaged as the filter use was demonstrated, however immediately after having a straw placed around their neck a few kids got cups of water from a bucket and started drinking from the cup. I was shocked, I mean jaw dropping shocked and felt like I took it way too personally, but felt compelled  to walk to the child and show them how to drink the H2O through the straw.

The domino effect ensued. Through their beauty, innocence, intuition, and positive spirit children never cease to amaze me. It gave me some peace in my heart to know these children would help each other. They gained a new tool and were willing to use it. It’s not a long term fix, it may not even last them long enough to make a substantial difference, but they are further educated and have clean water today and for up to one year. We will not know what they took from it. The deep ceded tradition of the village may not promise change. However, the strength and conviction in these kids gives me hope that what we are doing makes a positive difference. I am very excited for tomorrow.

SONG from Zali Students

Water Is Life

You are welcome

Our mothers they are welcome you

Our fathers they are welcome you

Children, children

They are welcome you

God bless you for starting the program in our community

This is a song (not the complete lyrics) that was sung by the 4-6 level students in Zali. They had performed it the first day we were in the village, but the 2nd time they did it in the classroom during our handwashing review.  As they were singing I experienced full body goosebumps. It was an amazing feeling to have them be so attentive and hang on every word we said. The song was beautiful, and although they may not have even understood what they were saying, the fact that they shared it and were appreciative was incredible. There is a look in many of the children I encountered that is hard to put into words. It is as if I can see them completely with just one glance. All the innocence, compassion, and strength can be found in their eyes and bright smiles. They are so happy, yet simple. To me that is pure beauty.

KPAACHI YILI – Relationships

Authenticity. Integrity. Pure honesty. Positive spirit. True appreciation for life. All of these traits are representative of the Ghanian personality. The social structure is solid. The rules have all been set. Hierarchy established. In a society where cultural values exceed wealth, there is a great weight placed on relationships. We come to these people from the United States offering help. But if we avoid conversation and plow through cultural bounds we destroy our opportunity to develop respect. All of the time consuming procedures and processes that occur in transition like meeting the chief and elders, having a village ceremony, using a translator for educational purposes, chiefs closing remarks, presentation of gifts, etc. All of these things are part of the cultural structure. In order to develop relationships with the people we must embrace and dive into their culture. Our barriers must be down so we can give the Ghanians a chance to open up to us. The first step is the relationship. The next step is water.

I am honored to be a part of a group that has taken the plunge into the culture and lives of beautiful, faithful people. To be recognized as someone who is responsible for helping provide a community with clean water gives me a sense of inner strength I cannot describe. In this short week I have witnessed the development of strong relationships. These are not just business relationships, but personal relationships filled with honesty, integrity, and love. I truly believe I was brought to Ghana for a reason much larger than myself. I can only hope to emulate the Ghanian cultural personality. Recognizing positive spirit and authenticity is where I will start.

St. Charles Students Helping to bring Filters to students in Kenya!

by Kristine Bender

St. Charles Borromeo School students,  as part of catholic Schools Week, collected funds to send WATERisLIFE filters to Kenya!  “We have been doing sustainability labs and exercises to develop not only the science behind clean water, but to develop a personal awareness of their responsibility as stewards of our global environment.”  says Michelle Caluda from St. Charles.  ”Our  8th grade students delivered very cool WATERisLIFE collection bins to every classroom- PK3 – 8th grade to raise the funds. The students have chosen for their WiL filters to go to students in Kenya.”

Great way to make an impact kids – you ARE making a difference in the lives of other students in Kenya.  We will post photos once your filters are delivered to school children in Kisumu, Kenya!  As they say in Kenya, Asante Sana - thank you.

The 8th Graders presented to the Early Childhood classes – what a great way to share knowledge, and spread the word about the need for clean water

WiL Village Partnership A Chiefs Speech

by Kristine Bender

At WATERisLIFE we offer the opportunity to partner with your own village -we can connect you with one of 288 villages in Northern Ghana, 18 schools in Kenya and one of 33 villages and schools/churches in Haiti.  Partnership equals relationships and this is how long term clean water can be brought to the villages to help transform lives.  WATERisLIFE can give you the opportunity to provide the following to your village – to bring them clean safe drinking water;

1.  WATERisLIFE personal water filters

2.  Health and Hygiene Education programs

3.  Long term clean water solution

4.  Monitoring system to maintain clean water in your village.

A WATERisLIFE team was in Ghana this past week and connected two US partners with villages in the Tolon District.  WiL presented the partners to the Village Chiefs – what an opportunity to connect with your own village and see your donation dollars in action and build a relationship that will transform lives – theirs and yours!  Please read the Chief of Zali’s Speech which he presented in Dagabani, and is translated below.  Once you meet the Chief of your partner village – and discuss how to bring clean water solutions to his people – it will be forever etched in your heart.

“What an incredible experience to visit our adopted village in Ghana!  Partnering with the people of Zali to bring water straws and work together on a sustainable solution was life-changing for all of us.  To see 1000 people dancing and celebrating our arrival is a moment I will never forget.” – Pastor Nate Schaus, Summit Community Church

The Chief’s Speech

Mr. Chairman, representative from the District Assembly, friends from the USA, invited guests, ladies and gentleman.  I find it a pleasant Sunday to stand before you to present on behalf of all Chiefs and Elders of Zali and it’s surrounding communities.

In the first place, I want to thank God for making this day possible.  Chiefs, as the saying goes that WATERisLIFE which we can all agree with because all living things depend on water for their daily lives.   I can also say that Zali is one of the blessing communities because ther are many regions, towns and communities but becuase of God’s caring, he chose Zali for this particular gathering and by the power and sympathy of God, we will get the water from the hands of the WATERisLIFE project.

Mr. Chairman, Sanitation is also one of the areas that the entire community always put their attention on .  This comes to reality because when we keep our homes and surroundings clean it will prevent us from contracting some diseases like cholera and others.

Mr. Chairman, the Chief’s, Elders and the entire community have prepared enough to work hard with the project to get safe drinking water for the good people of Zali.  This is because women travel long distance to fetch water which is sometimes contaminated by animals.

Chiefs, we can all testify that unsafe water is very dangerous to human health.  So when we get clean and safe water it will save the lives of the people of Zali and it’s surrounding communites both near and far.  Therefore, it is my hope and prayer that God will guide us to get this water since God is the owner of everything in the universe.

In sum, Mr. Chairman, whatever it will take us with this project to get water, we are in support of that.  I want to also appeal to the District Assembly to also assist us and the project whatever we are in need of to make this dream a reality.  So, I say God richly bless you for coming here and be with us all “Ni yi tuma pam,” “Naawuni ni son”

WiL Ghana Team on Way Home

by Kristine Bender

WiL Ghana Team will be returning to US soon.  The trip was exceptionally productive and  highly successful.  All team members stayed healthy, enjoyed time in their partner villages – building relationships and bringing clean water to many in need.    Team members will not forget the many magical moments with new friends as they enhanced many lives of other human beings this past 10 days. Their contributions have truly enhanced someone else’s life and their gift has made those in Ghana so very happy.  Although the team’s kindness was a great gift to many – the team would agree that the gift those in Ghana gave back was far greater.  The team delivered true evidence that they have made a difference in the world.  It’s only the beginning…

Thursday Team Highlights

by Kristine Bender

Thursday morning the team  started a bit slow after an evening of fun, and enjoyed breakfast and time at the local markets.  The goal of the morning was to open the first WATERisLIFE Ghana office – post office box, banking account and necessities to support the Ghana Projects in the coming months.  The WiL team in Ghana is growing, and looking forward to partnerships and strategic plans for the coming three years.

The team dressed in their best Ghana wear  and visited the District Executive Chief for a meeting to discuss WiL plans forward.  The Chief offered the District Assembly’s full support and offered WiL the opportunity to stay in the villages on our next visit.  This is truly an honor, and reflects the support and trust for both parties.  The team also met with Mr. Lahnser and the District Health Director, and again was given full support of their team and resources to help develop programs and partnerships to bring clean water to the area.

We had dinner at SWAD with the Federwitz Family, and enjoyed goat, rice, yam fries and local flavor.  Hannah, Levi and Eden left a beautiful mark on the team’s hearts, as they are little ones of the Federwitz family and their laughter and sparkle was contagious.

Wednesday

by Kristine Bender

Wed team chose to give up R&R day to visit villages of Zali and Kpaachi Yili again.  Team walked damaged and broken fence lines to access the repair costs and work.  One of the water dugout fences had been installed 35 years ago and was broken, torn down and grown over with grass.  The team will work with village partners to rebuild the fence to keep the cattle and animals from going into the only village water source.  The Hygiene team also visited each classroom in the two villages to reinforce the importance of filter use and basic hygiene, and a team gathered village woman and children to teach about Diarrhea prevention and ORS.  Such beautiful women who care deeply about their families health – but just need the tools to move the commuity forward.

In the evening – the WiL team presented at the Tamale Rotary Meeting.  Pastor Nate Schaus – White Tanks Rotary, presented a Rotary Flag and we presented the WiL Vision for Partnership on projects in the Tolon and Kumbungu Districts in Northern Ghana.  The meeting was a wonderful representation of partnership and collaboration to create successful and long term programs to support WASH initatiatives and support clean water programs currently in effect in the area.  After a long day, the team enjoyed a few Star Beers and laughter at the Catholic Guest House and told stories of the week into the wee hours

We WiL

by Kristine Bender

Team spent two 3 days in villages, also had opportunity to visit the King’s Village Facility which provides a school, orphanage  nutrition center, medical center, church and community support to surrounding villages in Kumbungu District.  Many thanks to Iddrisu WiL Program Coordinator, and those that were such wonderful hosts at King’s Village.  It was great to meet The Director, Moses, Terry and Ann – and WiL looks forward to a partnership and return trip to support villages in such dire need of clean water – Gbali and Tollogu.  The team also particpated in a tour and program overview at the Pure Home Water Factory.  PHW is working on a contract to manufacture 1000 ceramic pot filters for Tamale Rotary.  Thank you to Mary Kay Jackson and Susan Murcott – from MIT for their time and willingness to share their passion and a wonderful look into a business that is improving the lives of those needing clean water.  Had dinner at the African Touch Restaurant – even if Taxi’s don’t always work – we can manage.

Having a great time in Ghana.  Here with a fantastic and hilarious team!  It is well said that God has a plan for you.  But the thing is, you are God’s plan.  This is the reason I go to serve.

We have already distributed over 1500 WiL filters in just two days – along with Hygiene Training Clinics,  and we have visited villages that were in desperate need of immediate clean water.  It’s His plan in action…I am most sure.

Ghana Day 3

by Kristine Bender

On Monday the WiL Team traveled to the villages of Kurivohoyili and Kpaachiyili.  Enroute, the team stopped to deliver fabric to a street seamstresses to sew into a stunning Ghana style dress - the dress  was completed by the end of the day.  The fabric was a gift from the District Executive Chief on our last visit to the Tolon Kumbungu District.   The ladies  on the team will deliver more fabric tomorrow  to these talented seamstresses, and we promise to post photos of the finish products on www.facebook.com/joinwaterislife .

After viewing the turbid water in the dugout in Kurivohoyili- we were met by a member of the Community Water Solutions NGO organization where we were able to learn abouth their work to create a water filter program managed by women in the village.  This system provides clean water for sale for a small amount of pesewas each day.  We have discussed a partnership with CWS as the WiL Water Filter will provide a fantastic compliment to their program, specifically for children in the Northern District in Ghana, as this area is one of the most impoverished areas and most in need of clean water in the world.

Once in the village of Kapaachiyil, the team met with the Chief and Elders and the WiL village partner – Odyssey Preparatory Academy representative Jessica , who was presented Koa nuts – a nut that has a high caffeine/energy content and is of high value.  She also was given 2 Roosters and bundles of yams – which is customary to show gratitude. A true honor as the village is so grateful for her leadership and help from the school’s students to work to bring clean water to them.  Jessica also received a marriage proposal from the Chief!  Once Jessica presented the Chief with a WiL water filter – he was so elated that he waived for the drummers and jumped up for joy and began dancing.  He invited Jessica to dance with him.  Now you must also know, this man is very old and getting up and dancing was not anything that we had expected.

The team walked to the school and another ceremony was awaiting.  Once all introductions were completed, and speeches ended, the school students performed a 10 minute drama presentation on Water and  Sanitation – the students really understand the importance of clean water and expressed their sincere interest in making the change.  Jessica and the Hygiene Team hosted training for students at the school - and the students were mesmerized.  Jessica also spent extensive time discussing with the Headmaster the needs of the children and the importance of clean water for his students.  It was an exhilerating day of bringing filters to the village of Kpaachiyili – a day the village had been waiting and anticipating for many months.  500 filters were distributed as a gift from Odyssey Preparatory Academy - and each student and child in the village received one.  Filters are the first step to long term clean water for this village, and the WiL Water Projects team surveyed the water situation and will be providing direction for a sustainable solution for this area.

The excitement continued into the afternoon - which was filled with an friendly discussion and a traditional meal with WiL Program Coordinator Iddrisu Aziz Boare’s family.  We talked and shared stories for quite a long time – a great chance to get to know his family and community.  Traditional FuFu, along with Rice and Beef was prepared by Iddrisu’s 12 year old sister, Fati. Dignitaries from the community joined our meal - with a total of nearly 25 enjoying each other’s company over a wonderful authentic meal.  Reminder FuFu and all must be eaten with your fingers on your RIGHT hand!  Time to sign off – Mosque’s are screaming prayer time as it is dusk.  Must respect….

More from the Village of Zali tomorrow – and a summary of our day of meetings with two WiL partner organizations that do work here in Ghana that will inspire and amaze.

While in the Village of Kpaachi Yili

Ghana Team Update

by Kristine Bender

Aplogies to all – this is our first chance to access connection to intenet  as our team has been non stop since arrival to Tamale on Saturday morning with our work in the villages.  While in the airport in Tamale, I recognized a gentleman in the crowd.  He was the Tolon Kumbungu District Executive Chief Iddi Manza. I approached him and introduced myself – he recognized me and confirmed that we were to meet that afternoon.  We had met on our last visit to Tamale.  What a surprise to run in to him and visit – as he was on the same flight as our team.  I showed him our photo together on the ipad and we had a good laugh.  It was a great start to our trip.  After 11 WiL team members arrived in Tamale, Ghana, we connected with our Ghana Program Coordinator, Iddrisu Aziz  Boare.  Our team is now twelve.  After arrival we moved full steam ahead.  Saturday was spent collecting supplies and materials as well as District welcomes and time on cultural and informational meetings. Sunday was an overwhelming, inspiring and touching day.  The team delivered 1000 filters to the village in Zali where we were welcomed first by the Chief’s ceremony and then dancing and celebration.  It was truly a party like no other.  The smiles on the faces of the villagers shone brighter than the sun. The team held a health and hygiene training clinic to over 1000 villagers.  From germs to poop, clean water and diarrhea to a community game of hangman – many things were learned by both the villagers and the team.  The team was presented gifts from the Chief and villagers – 3 Guinea Fowl, eggs, 3 bunches of yams and a goat.  Truly,  how does one fit all of this into a 15 passenger van – already carrying 20 passengers  – it’s the African way.  The WiL team also met with Community Water Solutions Organization, and Tamale Rotary to discuss partnerships to bring clean water to the 270  villages in the Tolon Kumbungu District.  One of our amazing moments was when we were invited to sit with the Head Chief of all Chiefs (I am sure that is not his official title.)  We were invited into his Palace where we discussed with he and his Elders the future vision of WATERisLIFE in his area.  We were presented with Koa nuts – a great cultural moment for the team – and a time of respect, listening and partnership discussions.   We also had the distinct honor to host a Geological Round Table with the Deputy Regional Director to discuss the geology of the Voltain Region of Northern Region.   All of this in one simple day – the team hit pillows late into the evening with colorful memories from a day of appreciation, hope and opportunity to make an impact in an area in such need.  Time running out on computer we will post more later….20 seconds..19..18..17

Maureene

by Kristine Bender

I Would Like You to Meet Maureene.

This is Maureene Adhiambo. Maureene lives in Kidiju, Kenya – near Kisumu.  Her mother has died, and she is now living with her Aunt Gaudencia where she is helping to care for 7 children.  She has dreams of being a journalist one day.

Maureen spends a majority of her day cooking and fetching water from a bore hole.  The borehole is not sealed or covered. As she pulls the water out of the hole with her rope – I can see the muscles in her upper body tighten.  When the bore hole dries up she fetches water from a pond – which is also for the cattle that roam in and out of the body of water.

Maureen has written an oral narrative in my journal – very thoughtful, inspiring with deep meaning and song. The story is a metaphor using gardens and flowers – as it relates to the continuous spread of AIDS.

She longs to continue her education and be a television journalist.  To give Maureen the opportunity to achieve this dream – we must bring clean water to her and her village.  The water in the bore hole is contaminated and carries bacteria which can cause sickness and disease.

This young woman has strength, determination, humor, and intelligence.  She is bold in what she stands for.  We want to give her that chance to be the woman of her dreams.

With your $30. THiRTY donation – we can help bring clean water to many young people that have dreams and hopes for their future…one by one.

Please take a few minutes and donate your $30.  You can change a life next year.  Maybe it’s Maureen’s.   http://www.waterislife.com/about/donations

From the Field Project Update – More Filters to Kisumu

by Kristine Bender

Filters were distributed in the Kidiju and Chiga areas of Kisumu by the locale women’s group, Babyface.  They are an organized group of widows who care for each other, and their community’s needs.

100_4883

Additional filters were given to Babyface for distribution as the need arises in their villages.  These filters will help fight preventible waterborne diseases – Typhoid, Cholera, Dysentery and Diarrhea.  Children, the weakest members of villages, are the most vulnerable.  Babyface, with the help of Maisha Orphanage, will distribute where the need is greatest.

From the Field Project Update – Hygiene and Sanitation Clinics

by Kristine Bender

Our most recent Hygiene and Sanitation Clinic – at Omungi School in Kisumu – was lead by a team of 3 Nationals (locals).  Kennedy put it best, ”  We are trainers of trainers, we need to go out and teach others.  Teachers aren’t teachers, until they teach.”  Very inspiring to those in the class.  20 leaders – men and women – from the community attended the two day seminar, and while waiting for the trainers to arrive – a mean game of Hangman ensued!

When we bring in a new project to a community, such as Hygiene awareness – we can assimilate our program into the community, showing first how WE make the changes.  We become role models and others will be interested to learn what we are doing.  Specifically they will be interested in  learning how we are keeping our families healthy.  To learn how you can partner with a community to provide WATERisLIFE.com life-saving water filters, a sustainable clean water source, and hygiene and sanitation training email kristine@waterislife.com.  You will be amazed at how your simple gift of partnership can transform the lives of a community.

From the Field Project Update – Clean Water to Kenya

by Kristine Bender

WATERisLIFE.com is working in the Kisumu area of Kenya.  These are the Luo people and they speak the Dholuo language – as well as Swahili and English.  WATERisLIFE.com has distributed water filters, hosted Hygiene and Sanitation Clinics and drilled wells at Maisha Orphanage, Ayaru and Omungi Primary Schools, as well as a location in the Kidiju community in partnership with a local women’s organization – Babyface.  WIL has also completed a pump repair at Kidiju Primary which has approximately 500 children.  The water was ’spoiled’ so the children were unable to access water.  Clean, fresh water now flows.
IMG_4869IMG_5795IMG_5804

WATERisLIFE.com is now researching additional water projects in the Kisumu area – specifically in the Kano Plains area – in the sub locations of Mayena and Chiga. Email kristine@waterislife.com if you are interested in partnering with a village or sponsoring a project in this area.

Your Thirsty World

by Kristine Bender

Next week, the world will be celebrating Earth Day, but while many will be making efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle, Nickelodeon is putting the spotlight on another important issue, the global water crisis. On April 18, Nick News with Linda Ellerbee will be examining the topic in Your Thirsty World, a half-hour program in which kids in Honduras, Bangladesh, California and New Jersey talk about their water problems and what is being done to solve them.

Many of us are used to being able to just turn on the faucet when we need a drink, however, one in five people do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. Water-related illness can cause sickness and death, and is responsible for killing almost four million people every year.

And while kids in Honduras and Bangladesh spend hours physically hauling or standing in line for water, this isn’t just a problem for developing countries — it’s happening in our own back yard, too. The water crisis is caused by politics, poverty and pollution, which are things that affect many regions, even in America. For instance, families in Central Valley, California cannot drink their tap water because fertilizer and pesticides have contaminated it.

“Safe, clean water is not only a basic human necessity,” Linda says. “It’s a basic human right. Or ought to be. That’s what kids believe, and I agree.” Watch the eye-opening report on the global water crisis on Your Thirsty World, which premieres on Sunday, April 18, at 8:30 p.m. ET.

World Water Day 2010 – Change IT!

by Kristine Bender

March 22 – World Water Day

WaterIslife.com Introduces the Change IT Campaign. Could you ‘find’ $1 in change in one year? Of course you can!   If each of us can ‘finds’ one dollar in change in one year – we can help solve this global pure water crisis and provide clean water to millions which will transform communities.

Water Is Life (www.WaterIsLife.com) is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a portable clean water solution to the world’s poorest nations. Water Is Life provides a device that’s in the form of an oversized drinking straw, which successfully filters contaminated water into clean drinking water. Water Is Life is launching a new campaign called “Change it”, on March 22, which is the international observance of World Water Day.  Water Is Life plans to carry their message – to turn loose change into clean drinking water – to schools, businesses, corporations, organizations and individuals across the country. The goal is that if everyone ‘finds’ $1 or more in spare change over the next 12 months – collectively, we can drastically change the lives of millions in need of clean water.  Each dollar will make a difference, and together, we can Change it!

Most people come across loose change everyday. Whether it’s a coin in a Target parking lot, under a couch cushion, or at the laundry mat, – one would be surprised how quickly it adds up. Once each person, group or organization has collected loose change they find over one year, they can go online to www.waterislife.com and make their contribution to Change it. The hope is that The Water Is Life Straw will offer a short-term solution to thousands in need of clean, fresh water.

The cost is $10 per unit and it provides 3 liters of clean drinking water a day for one year. The Straws filter disease-infested water on the go, providing those who wear it around their neck the most basic need — clean water. The device is a multiple-stage filtering process. The first stage removes particles as small as 15 microns. The water then passes through a chamber filled with iodine crystals, killing bacteria and viruses. In the final phase, a fine charcoal filter removes the water of its bad taste providing clean, clear water. Despite utilizing state-of-the-art technology to filter the water, the Straw cost is only $10 – and surely each of us can raise $10 in change in one year.  This breakthrough Straw will give someone the relief of knowing they have clean, life-saving water anywhere.

Today 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water and 1.8 million people will die this year due to preventable waterborne diseases – Typhoid, Cholera, Dysentery and Diarrhea. Children – the weakest members of villages – are the most vulnerable, and 5000 are dying each day.

Ken Surritte, the founder of Water Is Life says, “What keeps me awake at night is that thousands of people will die today if they don’t have clean water. We have a solution, now we just need to get them in the hands of the people who desperately need them. It would ease a lot of hearts and minds to know they could drink from any water source available to them and not have to worry about deathly bacteria and disease.”

Water Is Life has distributed personal filters 27 countries including; North and South America, United Arab Emirates, Sub-Saharan Africa, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, China and most recently Haiti – and the world needs more.  One straw.  One Life.  It’s that simple.

Samples of the Water Is Life Straw, HD video and photography are available upon request.

Change it donations can be made, and additional information on the campaign can be found by visiting www.waterislife.com

From the Field Project Update – Ghana Filter Distribution

by Kristine Bender

Over 100 WaterIsLife.com water filters were distributed last week in the Village of Kurivohoyili, in the Tolon Kumbungo District in Northern Ghana.

These are the Dagomba people and they speak Dagbani language.  The chief of the village is Chief Braima Napari, and the Woman Leader we visited with is Alima Iddrisu.

Alima IddrisuKurivoho Elder

There is no school in the village, but approx. 30 of the 150 children attend a neighboring village school. This village accesses water from a damed area, and the women and children haul water 3x-6x per day.  The water is contaminated due to cattle and other animals sharing the water source.

The village is excited to receive additional filters, and we are working to help create long-term clean water solutions, as well as provide health and hygiene assistance to Kurivohoyili.

All of the filters delivered had personal messages written on them.  Below are photos of filters donated by the Hayslett and Simmons families.  Each family composed a simple message on the filters, and they were hand delivered to children in this village.  It’s fantastic to know that your donations are in action and saving lives today!

From the Field Project Update – Team in Ghana

by Kristine Bender

Tolon Kumbungu DistrictField Prep

WaterIsLife.com field team visited Ghana to research 230 villages in need of clean water in the Tolon Kumbungu District of Northern Ghana.  Organized by Iddrisu Abdul-Aziz Boare (below left), WaterIsLife.com Program Coordinator-Ghana, the team was warmly greeted by the District Chief Iddi Manza, and his staff.  The Tolon Kumbungu District offers primary schools, two secondary schools, a police station, clinic and maternal health clinic.  The team visited eight villages to learn of their water needs, and how WaterIsLife.com could make an impact to transform these communities in the Northern District.

Iddrisu, Kristine and Mr. Lansah

With additional help from Abdulai Lansah (above R), District Guinea Worm Coordinator, and many others,  the village visits were extremely successful in capturing data and information on the areas water crisis, and how WIL can provide assistance.

Chief of Tolon Yipe Ligu VillageChief Ibraham Nbewaya - Tali Zoo Lanyili Village
Santu Paringini - Namdu Village

The team was able to meet with each village Chief, their Elders, as well as spend time with the community women leaders. In each village time was spent time at the water sources, understanding the water needs, discussing long term solutions and health and hygiene concerns.

WaterIslife.com will partner with many to supply personal water filters, help provide a long-term clean water solution and share health and hygiene support to each of these villages.  Once these basic needs are met, children can go to school, lead healthier lives – which will ultimately these transform communities.

Thank you to District Chief, Iddi-Manza, the District Director and their staff for their gracious welcome, and we look forward to working closely to help many villages obtain clean water and raise healthy children.

WIL at Maria Shriver’s Women’s Conference 2009!

by Kristine Bender

The WaterIsLife.com Team participated in the Women’s Conference 2009 in Long Beach!  Over the two days, more than 20,000 women gathered to share unique journeys with a powerful community of women and be united under one theme – Be Who You Are…An Architect of Change.

Womens Conference Oct 09 (23)

WaterIsLife.com sponsored a booth at the Night at the Village which sold out with over 10,000 attendees.  The Village really was the place to be as women had a chance to meet and mix and mingle with – and be inspired by – world class speakers, best selling authors, chefs and true Architects of Change.

In the opening ceremonies Maria Shriver said “Women should learn to trust ourselves and have confidence – self trust, an idea whose time has come.”

WaterIsLife.com made amazing connections with so many Architects of Change, and discussed partnerships with many organizations and individuals wanting to help children obtain clean water around the world.  One of the cool moments of the conference was a chance to talk with Dr. Jane Goodall. “Every individual counts.  Every individual has a role to play.  Every individual makes a difference.”

Womens Conference Oct 09 (27)

Premal Shah, Founder of kiva.org shared his insight into starting the organization which provides micro-loans to low-income entrepreneurs.  He said, “dont’ seek to be validated, don’t ask for permission or approval, just get started!  What great advice Premal!  Get involved, be an Architect of Change, and help bring clean water to children around the world!

The team is looking forward to next year’s conference – and hoping to be blessed with a corner booth again!  Thanks to all that stopped by and had such interest and support for WaterIsLife.com , and bringing clean water solutions to children around the world.

We have covered many miles, and without incident.  Not even a cold!  Unless you call the following gufaws, incidents;

Ice Princess hd

- Entire bottle of Olive Oil spills in RV during curvy road trekking,  Chocolate syrup spills in refrigerator treating each item in fridge to a delightful topping,  Pulling into a backwoods driveway for overnight with rig, and no way out,  Spending entire day snaking backed up sewer at Mother’s house,  Losing parking lot where our vehicle was in Boston – that street, no…that street?  No.  Catalytic converter on last leg, but we managed.

Moonwalker download

So many more small humorous things as with any trip or adventure, but we were blessed with a safe, and problem free journey.

The journey from the East Coast to arid Arizona was a highway of diversity.  All were excited to hit the Desert Terrain, and AZ state border.  We are happy to be home with friends and family, and looking forward to our next adventure to bring clean water to those without.

        CBS Interview with Liv!

As we head west, across the flat open range, dotted with mesa’s reflecting the early morning sunshine, we quietly reflect on the 40-day journey.

With the presentations and meetings on the Coast 2 Coast Journey finished, I feel a sense of urgency – get home and move forward on building WaterIsLife.com with the rest of the team.  Bring water to the kids in Kenya, in Haiti, in Honduras, in so many other areas of the world.   I am not a politician, not a preacher not an activist, not a social entrepreneur.  I am but one person, with an amazing family that wants this suffering to end.  Water is a basic need, one that we all have a right to.

With the amount of money used in so many areas of our lives and world, it is challenging to understand how and why we can’t solve this crisis.  Bring water to those dying – strategize, collaborate, focus our efforts and solve.  It’s we in the United States do best.

During our travels, we were astounded at the amount of people that want to help solve the crisis.

We must collaborate and work together – schools, churches, civic organizations, corporations, small businesses, other water organizations and non-profits – and begin to make a dent in the daunting statistics that surround us.

WaterIsLife.com has achieved the first step of their first year goal – to bring filters to Haruma, a slum just outside of Nairobi.  We must continue to work hard to meet the rest of the goal to bring filters to the next two villages in Kenya.  They are in desperate need of clean water.  Please think… How Can You Help?

As the girls reflect, their single focus is getting home!  I have not, in all of our 40 days, seen the girls rise and shine early with such enthusiasm! They led the morning chores, prepared trailer for driving and sat in the truck waiting to go!  They are anxious to see their friends at school and swim and returning to their comfy bed – and a refrigerator that doesn’t throw things at you when you open it!

New Mexico to Phoenix – we feel the humidity and moisture falling off behind us…

I was not confident that I would make it in to his office. While waiting, I spent time talking with his wonderful staff, and meeting others that were waiting to see the Senator.  The press were anxious to talk with the Senator as petitions had just been delivered to the State House, and they were anxious to get his statement.

Over the weekend the Senator was attending a wedding on the Cape and had discussed the upcoming WaterIsLife.com appointment with a family friend.  Super Capers dvdrip This friend went to high school with our friend Tarah Woods, through which this connection was made.

Long story short, the Senator thought that I was an organization coming in as Lobbyist for a water company.  He was pleasantly surprised to find out I was there to talk with him about WaterIsLife.com and discuss solutions.  He promised to find a way to help.

We talked for quite a long time and then he offered to have Josh, one of his staffers take a picture.  He also shared a story of a personal friend who has completed water wells in Africa. River Queen movie download

          Roxanne film

At the conclusion of our meeting, he asked his staff to arrange a tour of the State Building for us, and then to call him when we arrived at the Senate Chamber, as he would like to come up to have an official photo taken in the Chamber, and bring us out on the balcony over looking Boston Commons, one of his favorite places.

The Senator has served the State of Mass in the State Building for over 26 years.  He shared stories with us about the history of Boston Commons, and shared a personal story about Caroline Kennedy as they both sat on the Committee to create the JFK memorial statue at the State building.

The Senator took time to meet with the WaterIsLife.com team, get to know each of us, and talk about the water crisis – all on a day that was filled with pressing matters for the Chairman of the Committee to fill Sen. Edward Kennedy’s seat.  An important issue for our Country.

          That’s respectable, dignified and amazing.

Due to the long day at the Mass State Building, our trip to Cambridge was abbreviated. No time for an aggressive street team, but we were able to visit Harvard Medical School, saw the Business school and enjoyed the Charles River.

Alas, in the spirit of bipartisanship, we head from the Democratic State of Mass. to Kennebunk, Maine.

We are almost to our Coast 2 Coast goal – and will make our flip turn after a presentation at MeritusU in Fredericton, New Brunswick.

New England has been quite an experience, one with political significance for the Coast 2 Coast Team, one I am guessing our daughters will pass down to the next generation.

          New York!

          by Kristine Bender

          August 28, 2009

We are on day 25 of the 40-day Journey for WaterIsLife.com.  Or as the girls put it, only two weeks to go!  We are weary, but that’s what New York City does to you!

New York is spectacular, and with a stop at charity:water offices, it was inspirational.  charity:water has made such progress in its first three years – providing clean water around the world.  The Golden Child movie download Scott Harrison started the organization with only a few volunteers and has grown it into a vibrant non-profit with a full staff, and is in the process of moving into new offices in Soho. The Man in the Iron Mask онлайн порно каштанка  I was able to see Scott Harrison, the Founder – but only as he sat as his desk working.

          Farmhouse dvd

The thrill was the office energy.  I had the chance to talk with a few of the staff members and see how change can happen with dedication, perseverance and an amazing group of people with fantastic ideas and motivation – all working collaboratively for a cause.

Our NYC agenda also included an early morning to hang out at the TODAY Show Plaza.  With WaterIsLife.com banner in hand, a few trains and a taxi we made it to the line to enter the Plaza early enough to score a prime location.  We were pleased that we chose Thursday as our targeted day as we steered clear of Friday due to the Concerts.  Good planning on our part – Miley Cyrus was the concert on Friday and the line of camped out kids had already formed on Thursday morning to enter the plaza Friday.

          Today Show Plaza

While in line, staff answered questions, sold poster board and sharpies for $3, and offered a free breakfast to all in line.  They let us in at 6:40 a.m., checked all bags and read all signs.

Nervous moment, our Team was stopped and told “no signs with .com.”

With a few smiles, and kind words, they let us in.  We grabbed a front row spot located near Dean and Deluca – this process has a definite strategy behind it.

The crowd became friendly with one another, and camaraderie was formed by the end of the morning.  Throughout our day in the City, we would run into other Plaza goers with smiles and greetings.  We talked with many on the Plaza about WaterIsLife.com and all were excited for us and helped position our banner.  It was a blustery day, but in the end WaterIsLife.com team hit the trifecta.

Hoda walked passed us with a smile on her way to the studio – that was a fun warm up to our morning.   We watched on screens provided as the Anchors chatted, read, had makeup touch ups, adjusted and blew their noses.   As the show was underway, Matt Lauer, Anne Curry, Natalie and Al came out to the Plaza.  State’s Evidence film They were extremely friendly, and went out of their way to talk with everyone.  The entire process was wonderfully warm and genuine. All of the NBC staff on the Plaza were congenial and talkative, from when we first entered the line  - all the way through the two hour show.

          Lenny!

One of the segments outside on the Plaza was Martha Stewart.  She did a mosaic segment with Anne, Matt and Al.  For those that have known me over the last two decades – I am a Martha fan!  I was no more than 20 feet from her, and was on camera during her segment.  If hat’s my fifteen minutes, I’ll take it.

          Friendship Meeting

We were invited to present WaterIsLife.com at a Quaker Friendship Meeting in Plymouth Meeting, PA.  The Quakers use the word Meeting as many would us the word church. Peaceful Warrior video   Quaker Meetings are all over the Philadelphia area – each township, city or burrow may have it’s own Friendship Meeting.  In most cases the Meetings are very old buildings made of stone with sparce interiors.  The Plymouth Meeting House was built in 1709 and was later used by George Washington during the war as a hospital supporting Valley Forge.  The town is quaint consisting of very old buildings and homes, and one can feel the Quaker influence and presence.

We were welcomed by friends, and invited into the Meeting House.  It was very simple interior and smelt strongly of must (is that a word) and old wood.  The Meetings for Worship are based on the principle of silent, direct communication with God, with no pastor, music or order of service.  The Meeting House and all its arrangements have been kept quite plain so that the worshipper will not be distracted from the main purpose of the service.

As the group settles into reverent silence for one hour, we sit in meditation and prayer.  As the Quakers describe, this was an opportunity to take stock in our lives, review our hopes and aspirations, consider each for himself whether the things accomplished during the week represent real value and worthy contribution.

Although the Meeting for Worship is based on silence, all are free to speak, and from time to time, some may feel a call to rise and share their thoughts with the group. Charlotte’s Web movie   One older, stately woman stood up and told a story of a young women who attended Wellesley during the time of the Atomic bomb.

As we sat on the original benches, facing others, we enjoyed the silence and smells of the meeting. The doors and windows were all open, a slight breeze cut through the humidity and symphony of Cicadas.

After the hour of silence, the Meeting is closed when those on the facing benches shake hands.

Take note, if we return to another Quaker Meeting, I will plan to choose a bench where one does not sit directly in front of the slowly ticking clock…tick…tick..tick.

          tick...tick...tick

We then shared a potluck with all, and presented the WaterIsLife.com story.  So many at the meeting took WaterIsLife.com materials so that they could organize their own presentations, at their work and in their communities.  By chance, kismet, serendipity, whatever you wish to call it, a woman from the community – not a Quaker – had heard about our visit to the Meeting. She brought a friend and arrived late during the presentation.  During questions her friend stood up and said he was from Kenya, his family is in Kisumu and deeply thanked our team, and all those at the meeting for caring for his people.  He believes that due to the government disconnection with the people – the best way to help the Africans is to develop these grass root assistance programs.  He believes they are the most effective.  Encouraging!

We have already been in touch via email, and he will be valuable partner with WaterIslife.com as we develop, specifically in filter distribution.

The Quaker movement in our modern times is intriguing, but seemed confusing.  With more research and discussion, I am sure we could grasp the concept and reason so many are still dedicated the Quaker beliefs and attitudes.

For now, it was a moment on our journey that we will all reflect on for a long time.  If there were a way to capture the smell, the sight, the sound of silence, it would truly still not be as remarkable as we will remember.

To know that Quakers are so willing to help children in Africa today, helps reinforce that all walks of life in our global community want to reach out in our small world to assist others.  Now we just need to gather together, and get it done!

Yous know we tasted Philly; Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, South Street, The Crew Boathouses, and of course, Philly Cheese Steaks.  FYI, they also make a Philly Chicken Cheese Steak or just veggies – whodathunk they would be so accommodating!

With many highlights – and ones that so many others have experienced before us – spending time with Luke Holland from Senator Inhofe’s office was pinnacle.  He took us on a private tour of the Capitol Building, including a ride in the tram which transports Senators from the Russell Senate offices underground to the Capitol Building.  There is a digital clock placed near the tram so that the Senators know how many minutes they have remaining to cast their vote, as each vote is only open for 15 minutes.  The Building was a humbling experience, and makes one reflect on what each of us are doing as citizens to help –  are we making history in our own lives and communities.

Mark, the girls and I enjoyed talking with Senator Inhofe’s wonderful staff, and stopped in to say hi to staffers in John McCain’s office (they are not even from AZ!).  We met Patrick in Senator Edward Kennedy’s office – his parents are friends with Senator Tom Kennedy, who we will meet to share the WaterIsLife.com story in Boston.

Throughout our few day visit in D.C, we were able to take in the Library of Congress, Supreme Court, The National Mall, Washington and Lincoln Memorials, International Trade Center, Smithsonian, Blair House, White House  and Veteran’s Memorial.

          Thursday, August 20 – Day 18

The Coast 2 Coast Team spent the day in D.C.  Blindly, I took D.C.’s trusty public transportation system  - the bus and then Metro in for 8:00 a.m. meeting at the Russell Senate Office Building.  Many of you know about my compulsion to be on time – I won’t even tell you what time I was up in the RV blow drying my hair!

The commute was successful and I headed up the hill.  At first glimpse, the Capitol Building is breathtaking and expansive.

The country’s heartbeat is felt the moment you step from the Metro.  A few blocks from Union Station, on Delaware Street, two Air Force One helicopters flew overhead and circled, I am assuming they disappeared to land on the lawn of our White House…good Morning DC!

For me, the actual walk up The Hill was a moving moment.  I was alone, it was early, there were not many out and about as Congress is in recess, and I had a mission to share the WaterIsLife.com story with all that would listen.  I felt full and determined.

The Russell Senate Offices were quiet.  I roamed the halls, in awe of the powerful and dedicated people that come to work here each day.  My appointment was with a wickedly smart group of Senate Staffers who have a keen interest in African issues.  The Teacher ipod

After sharing the WaterIsLife.com message and aligning connections with partners that will be valuable to WaterIsLife.com’s success, we spent time discussing USAID and potential opportunities with FEMA.  It was a fantastic meeting with folks that have the knowledge and the experience to rock our world and create the change we seek.

In the meeting we discussed a return trip, and of course we would welcome the opportunity to continue to seek assistance in the funding and distribution of the water filters as well as creating sustainable water sources for African communities.

We will return to the Senate Office Building again tomorrow, with a trip to the Capitol Building in the afternoon.

I could get used to this lifestyle – dress in black, take public transportation, work on Health Care Reform, be a part of the U.N. Millennium Goal to reduce by half – by 2015 – the number of people without clean drinking water.

Well maybe not a reality, but walking Up The Hill sparked the dream…

I couldn’t help but to take a picture of Senator John McCain’s office!  I think I will stop in and say hello tomorrow!

Invasion of the Body Snatchers film Monday, August 17 – Day 14

We had the pleasure of presenting WaterIsLIfe.com and share our goal to help the children in Kenya with 3 congregations in Detroit this weekend!   Originally from Detroit, it was close to my heart to be able to return with a mission.  I will admit that this opportunity was a first for us, a distinct difference in the format of Sunday morning church than we are accustomed to.  We were ourselves and spoke from the heart explaining that working together, each one of us can help make a dent in the daunting task of saving lives in our global community.

Sharing the message that working collaboratively – by providing the water filter, providing a sustainable water source, medical training and education – will transform communities.  We also had very production meetings with Pastor Diane Washington – a dedicated supporter of WaterIsLife.com mission.  Her goal is to work with Detroit churches to bring 5000 filters to the children in Kenya as soon as possible.  Her inspiration and giving spirit reminds us that each day, no matter how small, a difference can be made.  If she takes only one filter to Africa in November – she has taken action to make the difference in one child’s life.

It seems quite odd that we are on day 15 of our Journey and continuing on.  Merlin and the War of the Dragons psp Our intuition tells us it’s time to return home, our purpose tells us to move on.

We now venture through Ohio – celebrating our daughter Picabo’s 14th Birthday at Cedar Point Amusement Park.  On Wednesday we will continue on to Washington D.C. to participate in Senator Inhofe’s Africa Senate Meeting.

After Washington DC, our Journey will continue on to Philadelphia, New York, Cape Cod, Boston, Bar Harbor, Portland, Maine, Fredericton New Brunswick, Hartford CT, Indianapolis, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Albuquerque.  Please share our calendar with others – and contact us if you would like us to visit your city, organization or civic group. p.s.  For the Mom’s wondering how in heaven’s name we are coping – yes we do have struggles, we try to nip the bickering and respect each other’s space.  Between set up and tear down, three squares a day, the dog and guinea pig chores, house chores, the homework, the pantry, the laundry, the meetings, the presentations, the emails, the blogs, the tweets…we are balancing each day just like we would at home. We try to wake with a smile each day set for adventure and those we may meet to share the WaterIsLife.com mission.  As long as everyone stays fed and is hydrated – we seem to run smoothly and having a blast.  The biggest challenge is adjusting to and understanding each new city, but Lola is helping to ease the stress of locating our destinations.

For the Men – you’ll just have to ask Mark!  I am sure he will admit it isn’t always Sunsine and Rainbows with 7 Women for 7 Weeks!  (dogs and piggies are all girls!)

          Love Chicago!

The Poker Club the movie Thursday, August 13, 2009

Summer in Chicago is fantastic!  The city is alive with music, art, shopping, eclectic dining, boating, all with a hint of European flair.  Our first stop of the day was for Miss Olivia.  She has been waiting her ‘whole life’ to visit an American Girl Store.  And so it was.  The American Girl Place on Michigan Ave.

          Moon Zero Two

Two stories of nothing but dolls and all that they needed to survive!  I must admit, if I get past the unnecessary spending that occurs to keep an American Doll outfitted – the message in the American Girl stories, and history that can be learned through their fictional lives – is worth the exploration into their world.

          Waiting all my life!

After a Chicago Red Hot, WaterIsLife.com had the opportunity to spend time at Rotary International World Headquarters, and had a very productive meeting with Jim Grumley, a long-time Rotarian who has worked for years on water projects in Nigeria.  Also, we had the opportunity to connect with the Public Relations department – and we will move forward to work together on Rotary Water Projects in the US and Internationally.  Each Rotary Club is autonomous, and Rotary International exists to motivate and guide each of these clubs.  Bingo rip There are over 250,000 Rotary Clubs around the world – with many currently working on water projects as a priority.  If your not sure what a Rotary Club or Rotarian does – Google or Bing, I think you will be surprised!  Below is a shot of the Rotary International Board room, where Board Members from all over the globe convene to make a difference in the lives of millions.

With the continuous help and support from Lola, our trusty GPS unit and friend, she timely directed us to 110 N. Carpenter Street.  For those not aware this is Harpo Studios, The Oprah Winfrey Show!  Taping doesn’t start until late August, but a fantastic Associate Producer of the show had invited us to come for a visit.  We were able to take photos outside – but not inside…it’s the rules!

          Harpo!

          The Badges!

As we entered the building and checked in with security, we were given Harpo Studios name badges. That, in and of itself, was cool!   Inside there is a grand staircase, which leads to a wonderful portrait of Oprah, from The Color Purple.  We met a wonderful gentleman – Senior Producer Joe, for a tour of the Studios. We visited the green rooms, took in the captivating photos along the studio halls – Nelson Mandela’s visit, girls from the South African school, which Oprah Foundation built, as well as every celebrity that you could imagine.  We retraced Oprah’s steps – as she would come from make up to the stage.  Before heading out to the stage her last stop is a mirror near the production room.  She touches up – a little hand sanitizer, which of course we felt it necessary to have a squirt, maybe some of her favorite Lancome Hand Lotion, shoes on – ready to roll.

In the room where Oprah tapes audio/voiceovers sat a box of Earl Grey Tea – Mark’s favorite since 1985!   Yes Mark, you and Oprah DO have something in common! The Tiger’s Tail move   Down Periscope trailer

We were able to share the WaterIsLife.com story – and talked about an upcoming initiative for WaterIsLife.com – soon to be announced on www.waterislife.com.

It may seem naïve of me, but if you remove the celebrity element and money from the equation – the company and legacy that Oprah has built is astounding.

The staff is diligently, and secretly, working on the premier show to air on Monday, Sept 14.  This is our first day back home from the Coast 2 Coast Journey – and we will all be glued to the tube that afternoon!

It was a very successful few days for WaterIsLife.com in Chicago, and Mark and I celebrated with a buffet at the Empress Casino – Woohoo!

On to Detroit, and looking forward to it!

          Running Storms

          by Kristine Bender

          Monday, August 10th – Day 7

          War of the Worlds psp

After a day of running and chasing storms through the plains and cornfields of Nebraska and Iowa – we hit Chicago on Sunday, August 9th.  The storms were boisterous and the skies spoke in ways the children had never heard – the dogs were skeert!

The Coast 2 Coast Team hit the streets running this morning!  The Team spent the morning at the Rainbows and Sunshine Learning Center.  All of the kids had such wonderful hopes that we can bring sweet water to all children around the world.

          Rainbows and Sunshine!

On to Downtown Chicago for a Wacker Street Team Attack!  Hung out at the Willis (Sears) Tower and talked with hundreds of people from Chicago, and all over the country.  Team was ‘kicked to the curb’ from the front of Willis building by a nice undercover guard who kindly told me I could go across the street to the Park to share our message.  I kindly obliged:)

Lunch Break at Giordano’s – thanks to Frank the Doorman on Wacker Street for menu suggestions – then back to Street Team until weary. It’s amazing what energy a Chicago Deep Dish with TONS of cheese can do for your spirit. A great day of sharing the WaterIsLife.com story of the water straw that saves lives.  Tomorrow we will be thrilled to tell you about two amazing appointments scheduled – hang tight!

          August 7th, Day 5

Cheyenne, Wyoming.  Needful Things hd It was time for WaterIsLife.com to Cowboy Up!  The team stayed at the AB RV Resort – of course, Cowboy Church every Friday!  But first we hit Cheyenne on a hunt for great BBQ and found so much more! Anne of the Thousand Days psp

We made friends and it ended in an invitation for an interview on KGAB – Cheyenne’s #1 Talk Show.  All for the love of BBQ

The Coast 2 Coast Journey led us thru Grand Island, Nebraska.  The team went for a cool dip in the lake, enjoyed a hot muggy summer night and closed out the evening with entertainment by thousands of dancing Lightning Bugs.

We are now traveling through Iowa headed for the Windy City – Two days Coast 2 Coast with Cows and Corn!  Rolling hills of corn, white farm houses perched atop the constant greenery, dotted with perfectly painted silos, makes us – for a moment – ponder the farmer’s life.  It’s really is all about the corn!

The first week was the most arduous of the driving – it is now behind us.  We have covered many miles, shared our story as much as we could, and worried how we can inspire those in our upcoming days.  As Greg Mortenson said in his book Three Cups of Tea, who knows if anyone is listening.

A hike to 8000 feet feels fantastic and the view breathtaking.  A simple hike in the altitude is refreshing and a reminder of how a few hours away from civilization can bring back the awareness of the basic needs of life.  Water. Food. Sanitation.  The difference for us is that once we came back down the mountain – all was available in plenty. Sunset Park on dvd   As we often are reminded in our family, not so for the little ones in Africa, their pursuit for these basic needs is daily.

The team is on day 5 in the 40-day Journey from Coast 2 Coast. From cold temperatures in the mountains of Utah, across the Continental Divide, to Cheyenne, it’s a day across Wyoming.  Anxious to pick up additional WaterIsLife.com presentation materials in Cheyenne, we will prepare for our upcoming opportunities to share the story – a simple filter, a simple solution.

Picabo and Olivia spent their afternoon on their ‘road-school’ assignments; Language arts, science, math, history/geography, journaling and an occasional snack.  We are all enjoying To Kill A Mockingbird, and looking forward to our next appointment.  It’s time to Cowboy Up in Cheyenne, and
